A travel plan is a long term management strategy for an occupier or site that seeks to deliver sustainable transport objectives through positive action and is articulated in a document that is regularly reviewed

Writing Travel Plans

We prepare Travel Plans and Travel Plan Statements for developers and organisations and for all types of site and land use. These may be in support of planning applications or other organisational initiatives.

Sustainable Transport Guidance

We are experienced in the drafting of local authority travel plan and other guidance supplementary to identified transport planning policy. We can lead author and carry out stakeholder consultation.

Sustainable Transport Strategies

We are able to undertake development sustainable transport strategies for local areas and have undertaken the ‘Critical Friend’ role for initiatives developed by others.

Travel Plan Coordination

We actively take on the role of Travel Plan Coordinator responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Development Related Travel Plans over the agreed lifetime of the initiative. Our task list includes travel surveys, travel information packs, administering travel vouchers, steering groups, newsletters, events, stakeholder consultation and personal journey plans.

Sustainable Transport Research

We are able to undertake specific research projects into aspects of Sustainable Transport and the Travel Plan process. This would incorporate an academic grounding of Literature Review, robust methodology, primary and secondary data collection and analysis, discussion and reporting.

Personal Travel Planning

We are experienced in undertaking area wide or corridor PTP interventions through contacting individuals and encouraging them to choose sustainable travel options through incentives. We employ established behavioural change techniques in the project process. Personal Travel Planning is “a targeted marketing technique providing travel advice based upon personal trip patterns that seeks to induce voluntary travel behaviour changes in favour of more sustainable modes of transport” (Source: Department of Transport: Making Personal Travel Planning Work, December 2007)

NRPs Travel Plan work is led Dr. David Knight who is a Chartered Transport Planner with 35 years’ experience working on consultancy projects in the private and public sectors. David has been working on Sustainable Transport and Travel Planning projects since the mid 1990’s. He was an appointed adviser on the Government’s Travel Plan Site Specific Advice scheme between 2001 and 2006, and has led the development of numerous travel plans for a wide variety of organisations and land uses. This has included both the planning and implementation stages. He has advised on best practice travel plans and has undertaken a number of commissions for Transport for London including co-authoring guidance, developing tools and auditing development travel plans submitted in support of planning applications. He has run PTP projects and advises on sustainable transport strategies. David has run a number of regular training courses approved by Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and has previously lectured in Travel Demand Management and spoken at conferences in the UK and Europe. He is a CIHT Technical Champion.
